Aquatic microbial ecology, a growing interdisciplinary field, has become increasingly compartmentalized in recent years. The aim of this volume is to propose a framework for biochemical and molecular approaches, which are employed ever more widely in studies of aquatic microbial communities and ecosystem functioning.

Lab: (865) 974-0682 wilhelm@utk.edu Microbial life plays a primary role in regulating biogeochemical systems in virtually all of our planet ‘s environments, including some of the most extreme, from frozen environments and acidic lakes, to hydrothermal vents at the bottom of deepest oceans, and some of the most familiar, such as the human small intestine. Aquatic habitats are rich environments for microbial life and have a global impact on the carbon and nitrogen cycles. The behaviour of microbes in response to changes in these environments can have a huge influence on ecology across the world. Compared to now, past studies were limited in their scope due to the sequencing costs and challenges associated with data analysis, making the approach available to a Aquatic Microbial Ecology and genomics Research Microorganisms are a diverse component of aquatic ecosystems and their metabolic activities are central to energy, carbon, and nutrient cycling. Our research investigates the biodiversity, metabolic versatility, and evolution of these important aquatic microbes using novel genomics-based molecular The success of Aquatic Microbial Ecology is expressed by its influence on other fields in ecology.

Aquatic microbial ecology has been the overarching topic of my research career. I have been working on deciphering the forces that shape aquatic microbial communities on all kind of aquatic environments from wastewater treatment plants to pristine freshwater springs, from lakes to small rock pools. I am currently working as an independent researcher at the Limnology programme of…

Aquatic microbes are essential players in freshwater ecosystems, catalyzing key processes of all major elemental cycles. My research group, Microbial Ecology contributes the microbial perspective to the department of Surface Waters’ aim of achieving an in-depth understanding of the physical and biogeochemical processes in freshwater systems, e.g. lakes and reservoirs.
